A 1981 U.S. Naval Academy graduate, Captain Marquet served in the U.S. submarine force for 28 years. After being assigned to command the nuclear powered submarine USS Santa Fe–then ranked last in retention and operational standing–he realized the traditional leadership approach of “take control, give orders,” wouldn’t work. He “turned his ship around” by treating the crew as leaders, not followers, and giving control, not taking control. This approach took the Santa Fe from “worst to first,” achieving the highest retention and operational standings in the navy.
After Captain Marquet’s departure from the ship, the Santa Fe continued to win awards and promoted a disproportionate number of officers and enlisted men to positions of increased responsibility, including ten subsequent submarine captains. Further, having been on the ship, Stephen R. Covey said it was the most empowering organization he’d ever seen and wrote about Captain Marquet’s leadership practices in his book, The 8th Habit.
Captain Marquet is the author of Turn the Ship Around! A True Story of Turning Followers Into Leaders. When it came out, Fortune magazine named it the #1 must-read business book of the year, and USA Today listed it as one of the top 12 business books of all time.
Captain Marquet retired from the Navy in 2009, and speaks to those who want to create empowering work environments that release the passion, initiative, and intellect of each person. His bold and highly effective framework is summarized as “give control, create leaders.”

Before joining the Turn the Ship Around Team, Andy practiced intent-based leadership as the director of Human Resources and Personnel Development at McGee, Hearne & Paiz, LLP, the premier accounting firm in Wyoming. Andy is a SPHR certified Human Resources Professional and lives in Venice, Florida with his wife.
After raising four children and reentering the workforce as a Pharmacy Technician, Leigh now handles inventory, the e-commerce store, and shipping needs for Turn the Ship Around.
Jane manages Finance and Logistics for Turn The Ship Around! When not booking travel or balancing the accounts, she enjoys time at the beach and with her critters.
Jason is a self taught developer with a passion for travel and exploring. As the “Resident Geek” for Turn The Ship Around he handles web development, analytics and site design for the team.
Dani is the team’s Executive Assistant. Her goal is to not allow anything to “slip through the cracks.” Most of her free time is spent on the water where she loves fishing and different water adventures!
Cathy comes to us from sunny Venice, FL. She loves to “plan and organize” so her position as Meeting Manager is a great fit! In her free time, she enjoys walking at the beach.
A Client Service Specialist with 20 years of experience as a Navy Supply Corps Officer
As a Navy Supply Corps Officer and young Junior Officer, Chuck served with David on the USS SANTA FE as his “Chop” executing all levels of logistics. This served Chuck throughout his successful career in leading highly successful teams as the Supply Officer in charge of Logistics for all submarines in Norfolk VA at the Naval Submarine Support Command, as the Assistant Supply Officer on the USS KEARSARGE and as a Customer Service and Contract supervisor at the Defense Logistics Agency.
After retiring from the Navy Chuck joined the team at Turn the Ship Around to continue to spread the message of Intent-Based Leadership to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to feel the difference that quality leadership and effective teams can make.
Over the course of his career, Brendan has worked with many companies and organizations in the financial services industry, investments and property development in Europe and the United Kingdom to help them become more successful through good leadership. He has brought about so many success stories, achieved through adopting simple leadership practices and principles that have changed leaders and companies for the better. Since joining the Turn the Ship Around Team, Brendan has accompanied David to events in the UK and Europe, combining his knowledge and experience with the principles of Intent Based Leadership™ to help companies create more leaders.
Mike is our resident research scientist. He is also an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee. His research and practice has focused on organizational culture, critical thinking, and psychological measurement.
